Godzilla Minus One will take fans back to the franchise's roots as this film is set in post-World War II Japan. So if you are eager to check out the film, Godzilla Minus One will hit theaters in North America on December 1st following a Japanese debut in November. Written and co-directed by the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hideaki Anno, Shin Godzilla returned Godzilla to his status as both a terrific force of nature and pure disaster metaphor. It’s a design that quickly caught on with audiences (there’s even a theme park where you can zip line straight into a replica of its maw).

This 50th-anniversary film has some of the touches of the original, but for the most part, it seems like a direct antithesis. Lean in arms, legs, and torso and with a smaller head, this Godzilla is less of a bringer of death and more of an action figure. It fits the purposes of the movie, though, which is primarily a parade of monsters being taken down by the King of the Monsters over the course of two hours.

Due to ongoing tensions with the Soviet Union, the American military refused to take action against Godzilla in the Pacific and warned the Japanese to begin preparing for the worst. In 1947, the minesweeper Shinsei Maru was ordered to stall Godzilla until the Japanese cruiser Takao could arrive and attack him. Shikishima, now a crew member on the Shinsei Maru, saw a destroyed ship and deep-sea fish floating to the surface and immediately recognized that the culprit was the creature he saw on Odo Island. Godzilla soon burst out of the water and sank the Shinsei Maru's sister ship, the Kaishin Maru. He then gave chase to the Shinsei Maru, which dropped mines and detonated them in an attempt to stop him.

So it was this act of climbing out from darkness that I think really tested the characters in many ways. I want to say in Toho's defense, the budget was less than $15 million, but that's a pretty high-budget film for Japanese production standards. Despite his amphibious lifestyle, Godzilla's body is vulnerable to barotrauma induced by rapid alterations in his depth when in the ocean. Though Godzilla managed to survive the rapid compression and decompression of Operation Wada Tsumi, it left him in a severely mutilated state, with Shikishima using the bombs loaded inside the Shinden to deliver the finishing blow. Despite his size, Godzilla has incredible reflexes, as demonstrated when he attempted to strike down the Shinden, which was said to be able to go 400 knots, with his jaws and hands.

His intent was to use cutting-edge CG to make his Godzilla fiercer and more photoreal-looking than ever before. The VFX was handled by Shirogumi (with Kiyoko Shibuya serving as visual effects director), using Maya for animation, Houdini for water simulation, and Nuke for compositing. Should the plan fail, balloons will be inflated under Godzilla to force it back up, killing it through explosive decompression. He plans to kill Godzilla in a suicide attack by flying into its mouth and detonating the explosive charges on board. Godzilla is extremely durable, rendering him effectively immune to conventional weaponry. Before being irradiated, small arms fire by the Japanese military on Odo Island served only to annoy and enrage him rather than deal any substantial damage.

Skeptical that the plan would succeed, Shikishima believed that Godzilla was vulnerable from the inside and could be destroyed if a plane laden with explosives was flown into his mouth. He recruited the reluctant Tachibana to modify a prototype Shinden fighter for his plan. During the closing days of World War II in 1945, Godzilla came ashore on Odo Island at night and entered a Japanese military airbase, attacking the military repairmen stationed there when one of their members shined a spotlight on him. Kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima entered his Zero on the airfield to try and attack the creature with its 20mm guns, but froze up as Godzilla stood in front of him. The panicked military repairmen nearby opened fire on Godzilla, enraging him and causing him to brutally dispatch them all with his jaws, legs, and tail. By morning, the only survivors were Shikishima and the lead mechanic, Sosaku Tachibana, who blamed Shikishima for failing to act and costing the others their lives.

This one also got a head tweak—bringing back Godzilla’s ears for the first time since the ‘60s, reducing the size of his eyes, and also giving him a prominent set of sharp teeth. Director Shusuke Kaneko had previously overhauled the Gamera series with a trilogy in the ’90s that often surpassed the Godzilla films, and what he brings to Godzilla is a return to the uncontrollable malice of Godzilla’s initial appearance. For Yamazaki, “Godzilla Minus One” (from Toho Studios and Rocket Communications) was an opportunity to reimagine the legendary kaiju franchise with a more badass monster attacking 1947 post-war Japan. Little did the director realize just how timely it was, with coastal Japan rocked by the New Year’s Day earthquake following the coastal quake last May. As Shikishima lures Godzilla to the trap set by two destroyers, Sumiko receives a telegram intended for Shikishima.

Godzilla's original form resembles theropod dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex with additional similarities to the 1998 Godzilla and the Godzillasaurus. He has a hunched-over, bipedal stance; digitigrade feet; a head larger relative to his body than after he is irradiated; and a tyrannosaurid snout. His dorsal fins are notably long, with the tallest being close to the base of his neck.

Meanwhile, Godzilla Minus One’s design is more in line with what we’ve seen throughout the lizard god’s history. Even in its initial T-Rex sized form, which sees Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) facing off against Godzilla for the first time, our favorite kaiju is built for destruction, and looks pretty cool while doing it. With Godzilla Minus One, writer/director Takashi Yamazaki cited three of the best Godzilla films as being important influences on Godzilla Minus One. While, of course, his direct live-action predecessor, Shin Godzilla, was one of them, there were two others that he submitted as sacred texts that absolutely reflect the tone and spirit of this sleeper 2023 movie schedule hit.
